The role of Research and Development in the Software sector is indispensable. Also the long term competitive advantage and the survival of the software companies is dependent on the Research and Development activities and the innovations they implement in their respective companies. But at the same time the R & D activities are confined mainly to the ‘adaptive’ area of multiple orientations. There should be R& Ds in other orientations also and the combinative products arising from those R & D s playing as new strategy contributing for the competitive advantage of the organization. Also the generative and adaptive and other strategic learning should combine to transform the organization into a fully reactive and thriving entity. So the purpose of the paper is to analyse the R &D in Infosys and its effect on the gross profit of the company and explains whether the R & D initiatives of the organization lead to the creation of innovations and creation of new knowledge and also explains the efficiency of knowledge management in Infosys and assess the level of multiple orientations in the organization and suggest measures to become a complete multiple oriented organization to gain sustainable competitive advantage over other software companies.
