India is the second most populated country in the world with nearly fifty of world's population. India is known for its custom, tradition, values, believes etc. but poverty, dowry and illiteracy are the causes for female infanticide in India. Although India has adopted various measures to curb to dowry system, it is still pervasive in the low income groups, and specifically among the poor, uneducated families in the rural regions. The primary contributing factors towards female infanticide and abortion is the fear of being unable to match up to the dowry expectations and then being socially humiliated and detested. Infanticide is a criminal offence but is rather an under reported crime.
