Glass ceiling represents the barrier which prevents women from achieving upward mobility into senior management ranks. The proportion of women in the workforce has grown world over but it has been observed that women often lack a sponsor who promotes and sells their skills and abilities to others in the organization and helps them climb the organizational ladder to reach the senior positions thus creating a gender gap in top management and executive leadership. Reviewing the survey data on women in the workplace, findings of the research studies on glass ceiling, this paper identifies the reasons for existence of glass ceiling for women employees and presents possible recommendations to overcome glass ceiling effect.
