Green Reforms in The Hospitality Industry

Environmental preservation is the imperative need for the survival of present day world as environmental degradation and ecological imbalances have posed severe danger for all sorts of life on the planet earth. The tourism industry over the period of time has became one of the largest industry worldwide. But tourism industry has also caused a great deal of loss to environment and eco-system of destination countries. Taking into account the bleak situation, the concepts of ‘Ecotourism ’and ‘sustainable tourism ’have come to forefront to safeguard natural environment. With the above insights as a backdrop, the main objective of the study has been to have an overview of the green reforms in the hospitality industry with special reference to tourism and hotel sector in the light of various international declarations, summits and conferences. The findings of the research reveal that importance of tourism as an economic activity has come to focus only in the second part of the 20th century. Between 1970 and 2000, the number has increased tenfold. On the other hand, most people of the world have equated development with affluence. In the name of tourism development the ecological resources have been over-burdened. As such, there is immense need for proper execution of various recommendations as provided there in by various green declarations over the years. Further, steps should be taken for afforestation, water cleaning, purifying the air and preserving soil fertility in the letter and spirit, because it is needless to mention that these resources are extremely polluted.
