Socio-economic Status can be defined as a rank or place of an individual in the society or locality in which he or she is living. In a country like India, there exists an inequality which is assessed in terms of wealth, assets, education and occupation as well. All these dimensions are directly and indirectly linked to one another. In our country, those children who belong to families with higher Socio-economic Status find it easy to join and admit in good schools and get good quality education which in turn reflect in their Academic achievement. Academic achievement is the most imperative and influential dimension in a students’ life. It is the outcome which a student get and gain after successful completion of his/her academic year.
The present study is an attempt to analyze the impression of Socio-economic Status on Academic achievement of Secondary School Students. A sample encompasses of 450 Students (240 Boys and 210 Girls) of class IX from different schools of both urban and rural parts of Aligarh district have been drawn by employing Simple Random Sampling technique. The effect of independent variable on Academic achievement is assessed by a psychological test developed by Ashok K. Kalia and Sudhir Sahu (2012). The findings of the study revealed the fact that Socio-economic Status has a positive and contributory effect on the Academic achievement of Students. The students belong to urban background differ significantly in their Academic achievement than that of rural students. The result of the study exhibit that urban students do better in their Academics than that of rural counterparts. Further, the study established that the sex difference plays insignificant role in educational attainment and progress.
