An Empirical Study ON: Speed Breakers-A to Safety or A Disaster Life

Speed breaker is a traffic calming device that uses vertical deflection to slow motor-vehicle traffic in order to improve safety conditions. Speed breakers are designed to be driven over at a predetermined at comfortable speed while causing exceeding discomfort at a higher speed. Speed breakers can be a source of serious hazards and accidents to a fast moving traffic. There is evidence to support the claim that speed breakers can cause accidents and injury. When vehicles approach speed breakers at a speed greater than some threshold velocity, the risk of accident or injury is substantial. Speed breakers are conspicuous in low visibility conditions like at night or when there is rain or snow especially in hilly areas. This problem is particularly acute in our developing country India where speed breakers don't always accompany signboards. The study gives alarming statistics to India.
