Abstract

Power sector is at the core of economic growth and development of a country. The present study aimed at assessing the trends in growth, agency-wise and fuel-wise production, plants utilisation and specifically the role of NTPC in power sector of India. The study is purely based on secondary data covering a period of ten years w.e.f 2007–08 to 2016–17 which were collected from various sources such as annual reports of NTPC, ministry of power website, Statistical survey of India, etc, which were analysed with the help of statistical tools like mean, standard deviation, COV, CAGR and graphs, etc. The results of the study revealed that private agencies produced more power in comparisons to centre and state with highest CAGR of 21.7 but contrary to that the capacity utilisation of plants fell significantly in case of private agencies. Though, the power generation in India had been highest through thermal power but the power generation through nuclear showed the sharp and highest growth. The installed capacity of NTPC is found to be growing at a slow pace of 4.76 (CAGR) in comparison to all India capacity of 8.61 (CAGR). The total assets of NTPC surged with a CAGR 11.25 while its sales and capital employed grew with 7.6 and 5.52 respectively which hints towards its consolidation as an economic power had through good management.
