Abstract

The leather and leather products industry is one of India's oldest manufacturing industries that catered to the international market right from the middle of the nineteen country, the demand for its products being both domestic as well as international right from the beginning. About 46 percent of the production in the sectors is exported and it ranks 8 in the list of India's top export earnings industries and contributes roughly rupees 10000 crores per annum that is about 4 percent to export earnings. The sector accounts for 2.5 percent of the global leather related trade of rupees 3,87,200 cores. An estimated 15 percent of the total purchase of leading global brands in footwear, garments, leather goods and accessories, in Europe, and 10 percent of global supply is outsources from India.
