Abstract

This research was carried out to measure the effect on Performance Appraisal System on employee motivation in a Software Development company in Sri Lanka. Comparing other industries, the software development industry is unique and different because its employees are most of the time occupied in multiple projects at the same time with multiple reporting lines both locally and internationally.

Considering the above factors, a Software Company in Sri Lanka was selected to carry out this research and the main objective was to explore the effects of the Performance Appraisal System on its Software Engineers' motivation on their present job roles.

In this study a Conceptual Model was developed with three independent variables. Namely; Goals & KPI's, Appraisal Feedback and Employee Proficiency. The extensive literature review helped to develop the Conceptual Model and the research methodology to be applied to carry out the research. The data was gathered through a questionnaire by distributing it among 158 Software Engineers of a software company and 123 responded to the questionnaire. The regression and correlation analysis techniques were used to analyze the data and a reliability test was done to test the reliability of the questions in the questionnaire. The finding after the analysis shows a strong relationship between the Performance Appraisal System and the Motivation of Employees of a Company.
