To study the allelopathic effects of important weed on germination and growth of wheat seeds, laboratory experiments were conducted taking 6 weeds species (Lantana camara, Cyperus esculentus, Echinochloa crusgalli, Eupatorium adenophorum, Ageratum conyzoides land Sorghum halepense) alorgwith a standard check (water). The results showed that the boiled or unboiled extracts of these weeds had, in general, inhibitory effects on germination of wheat seeds. The time taken for germination prolonged, root, shoot and leaf developments were seriously inhibited. The effects of boiled extracts of Ageratum conyzoides and Eupatorium " adenophorum, and unboiled extracts of Echinochloa crusgalli were found to be more injurious than other speeies in overall assessment. The findings of this experiment clearly indicate that before using these weed masses for manuring in wheat fields it would be safe to carry out detailed field research to ascertain the alleiopathic effects.
