The Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the employment figures of India as well as the other countries of the world. Since March 2020, we have seen different scenarios like corona infection in huge numbers, corona testing, quarantine, containment zone, lockdowns in industries, labourers losing theirjobs and rushing towards their native villages. The pandemic has been compelled the centre as well as state governments to fasten lockdown to all commercial and industrial establishments, transportation, educational institutions and government offices except the emergency services like hospitals, medical stores, milk bars etc. During lockdown many of the companies of private sector fired their employees and labourers which increases the unemployment rate. In June 2020, the monthly unemployment rate was 10.9% at the national level, 12.02% in urban area and 10.52% in rural area, which has been decreased to 7.9% at national level, 9.3% in urban area and 7.2% in rural area in Dec.2021 showing a positive impact on Indian economy as compare to pandemic period. The main objective of this research paper is to describe the effect of Covid-19 on unemployment rate in India which is based on secondary data and the same has been collected from books, journals and authentic sources of internet. The paper will be useful for researchers, academicians andpolicy makers for further studies on the issue.
