In most of the developing countries the local government institutions have been recognized as the most important instrument for socio-economic development. These institutions can be effective partners in the all-round development only if they are manned by qualitative leadership. The leadership at the local level has been considered the most vital segment as it occupies a crucial position not only in the initiation of the socio-economic development programmers but also their implementation. The study has been developed to analyze the status of municipal councillors in Haryana. The objectives of this research study are to know the socio-economic profile of elected representative, their personal achievements, motivational factors, society perceptions, barriers and future prospects ofcouncillors. In this study both qualitative and quantitative methods have been used to know the status of Municipal councilor in Haryana. The view and perceptions of the member have been collected and the related data have been presented in various tables. Observations and discussions were also held during the course of research. Municipal administration in Haryana has special significance more so during a changed regime. The study finds that the newly elected councillors and chairpersons are comparatively young and highly educated, but majority is novice to governance.
