In the process of rural development, science and technology must necessarily play a crucial role. Rural India has abundant human resources mostly of an unskilled nature. Also, rural people are tradition bound and cautious in adopting new methods or practices. They have the problem of lack of capital and low capacity to bear the risk of any loss. Therefore, there must be a realistic approach in prescribing a particular technology without being caught up with the jargons of high technology, intermediate technology of soft technology. Technology required must be one, which is resource, based, need based with in the available means and which suits well with the aspirations, environment and culture of the people.
There is need for an appropriate technology in different aspects of rural development as discussed below.
• Appropriate Technology in Agriculture
• Bio-gas Technology
• Animal Husbandry
• Appropriate Education
Effective utilisation of science and technology demands that the technologies would find ready acceptability at the lowest tier of rural areas viz. the gram panchayat, only if the technologies are user friendly, eco friendly and are economically viable. All efforts in the developmental processes in rural areas including science and technology efforts would never succeed unless there is a wholesome participatory involvement of the people. It also follows that the premise of transplanting technologies on to rural beneficiaries would not succeed unless the wisdom, experience, local precepts of management of life in general is integrated suitably in the process.
