Over the past few years, people have been consuming and wasting natural resources, causing an alarming situation to live within sustainable limits. Therefore, adopting a green sustainability approach is highly beneficial not only for the community and environment but also for success in the competitive business world, in terms of energy and resources saving. The present research explores employees’ views and engagement on green sustainability in the food and beverage (F&B) sector in the context of a small island economy, specifically Mauritius.
The research was based on the top companies in the F&B sector of Mauritius. The methodology used was through depth interviews with middle management of F&B companies and survey questionnaires were administered to employees in F&B companies in Mauritius.
The research provides useful insights into the concept of green sustainability for F&B companies in Mauritius. In fact, employees’ views and engagement on green sustainability in the F&B sector had been under-researched in small islands and the aim of the present study is to explore employees’ views and engagement on green sustainability in F&B sector in Mauritius.
Recommendations made will ensure that employees are more committed and dedicated to green sustainable strategies. Mauritius is still in the early stages of implementing green sustainable strategies and the present study will enable the F&B sector and even policy makers to better plan and implement green sustainable strategies in Mauritius within the context of the ‘Maurice ‘L'Ile Durable’ programme on sustainability (Budget speech, 2008–09).
