Abstract

The part of chemist has been varying over the past two decades. The chemist is no longer a broker of medicine and concocter of medicinal products, but also group participant involved in the providing of healthcare. Pharmaceutical care is growing importance with the challenges of self-care. The importance of pharmacist is increasing and for them, their greater involvement in self-care means greater responsibility towards their customers and an increased need for accountability.

This paper aims to obtain a baseline data on the role of pharmacist in self-care and self-medication.

The research was conducted in Delhi. The data was collected from 467 patients who came to visit the pharmacy for self-medication. The consumers who came to visit the pharmacy on behalf of others were excluded from the study. The data was collected via face to face structured questionnaire and the while collecting the data the purpose of the study as explained to them. The sampling procedure used to collect the data was simple random sampling. The data was analyzed using Regression Analysis and the software used was SPSS 18.

The consumers were loyal towards particular pharmacies and were reliant on their chemist for self-medication. Pharmacists play a very crucial role in promoting and curing consumer's health. Understanding the role of the pharmacist as health promoter it is important for the companies to train them more regarding the usage of drug, their doses and benefits and deathtraps of self-medication.
