Human resources are the set of individuals who make up the workforce of an organization, business sector or an economy. Predictions are that sustainability becomes the next big topic for Human Resource Management after internationalization and globalization. Sustainability in Human Resource Management is an issue in companies throughout the world. Sustainability has been subject of thought and reflection in the field of management for a long time. Only recently, however, does the link between sustainability and Human Resource issues seem to have received attention. The main goal of this paper is to introduce this literature and their different approaches, to identify the benefit of this perspective for traditional Human Resource Management research, and to suggest first approaches towards an extended theoretical framework for sustainable human resource management. Finally, the paper proposes open research questions and outlines of an emerging field of research. A considerable variety of specific instruments supportive of sustainable HRM is in use.
