Abstract

Public Distribution System is one of the most important social service systems. The efficient functioning of PDS is of vital importance to the larger percent of population that are economically backward in the country so PDS has been recognized as a permanent feature of the Indian economy for the supply and distribution of essential food grains like rice, wheat, sugar and kerosene, at reasonable prices to the vulnerable section of the society. Government of Punjab is responsible for procurement of food grains and other essential commodities, maintenance of stocks and their storages, supply and delivery to the citizen through distribution centers at reasonable or subsidized rates, food security, license etc. A well-organized Public Distribution System (PDS) is maintained in the Punjab State through network of 8040 Fair Price Shops. The present paper focuses on the Management of Public Distribution System in Punjab with reference to Sangrur district.
