The paper presents the scenario of marine fisheries on the coastal fisheries of Purba Midnapore, one of the coastal district of West Bengal as revealed by the study based on the primary survey through a well designed questionnaire. The study attempts to rank the fish landing centers in production of edible fish and also focuses on the issue of regional variability. Finally the paper concentrates on the policies undertaken by the Government of West Bengal for the welfare of fishing community in West Bengal.
