Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the developments in the area of management and reporting of Intellectual Capital (IC) by firms and identify the gaps of the extant research specifically relating to its disclosure with focus on India.

The paper examines the meaning of Intellectual capital in terms of its origin and definitions. It further examines its growing importance and reporting frameworks currently in use. Methodological issues are considered in relation to the use of source documents, coding frameworks and research methods.

The paper concludes by identifying the need for a generally accepted framework for its measurement and reporting to facilitate more accurate comparison between firms. Further, there is a need to take up research in this area in developing countries like India where it is in its nascent stage.

Lack of consistency in reporting practices makes comparisons across countries/industries difficult. The paper emphasizes the need for a uniform and consistent frame work for the reporting of intellectual capital items.
