Abstract

The study aims to highlight the role played by the Non-governmental Organizations in the rural areas in developing the society and the individuals, leading to the development of human capital through education, skill development and enabling self decision making. Education is crucial to the development of individuals as well as the society. Hence it is the most important area of interventions by the developmental NGOs. Education also leads to knowledge and skill development and enhance the ability to make choices and decisions. The compulsion of the state to open up its economy and align with the forces and process of globalization and liberalization for its survival in a fast moving world has forced the state to withdraw itself slowly from investment in the social sector. The apparent reason was to maintain the fiscal discipline. In this process the vast majority of the deprived sections of the society was left behind. In this context the NGOs became prominent by reaching out to the marginalized and deprived and created their paradigm for development. This research makes an enquiry into the impact of this model of development on the human capital of the rural areas.
