Migration and Rapid Urban Growth: A Study on Siliguri City

Abstract

Last few decades, Siliguri has experienced rapid urban growth rate. This rapid urban growth rate is not only for tourism, tea industry, economic or geographical location but most important reason is that huge number of in migration into this city. Siliguri, the most important urban area within the region has shown tremendous growth. Due to in-migration of people from across the state and the country create rapid urban growth into Siliguri city. However, Siliguri was a village at the beginning of the twentieth century but now Siliguri is a highest urban growth city in West Bengal as well as North East India. The city is experience a rapid expansion of its population particularly in last few decades. The present research mainly highlighted on the relation of migration and rapid urban growth into Siliguri city. Analysis of migration flow into Siliguri city has based on secondary data taken from migration table census of India.
