Gender and Financial Literacy - A Statistical Analysis

Abstract

In the era of revolutionized financial structure across the globe, financial literacy assumes a significant place in the lives of people. Making informed decisions about savings and investments is essential for the financial well-being of people. Studies have shown that women are less financially knowledgeable than men and are less likely to plan for their monetary security. The present study has been made with the objective of finding the differences in the level of financial literacy among males and females in Jalandhar city. A sample of 200 people (in age group of 20–35 years has been selected using judgemental and randomized convenience sampling methods. The data has been collected using questionnaire and it has been analysed with the help of SPSS 18.0 using chi-square test. The results have shown that there is significant difference in the level of financial literacy gender-wise in the study area. As financial literacy is a very important aspect, so measures should be taken for its improvement, especially among women, to help them prepare for retirement and financial management.
