Trade Policy Implications, Revealed Comparative Advantages and Competitiveness: Evidence from Indian Industries

Abstract

India's Trade Policy regime is uncluttered, translucent & constituent with WTO obligations, reforms in trade policy started in July 1991 with ongoing process of removal of import restrictions, solidification import preferment measures & setting up institutions for executing the WTO obligations. As an evidence from the past there has been so many trade policies implemented for that an attempt has been made to explore and measures the policy implications, comparative advantage and competitiveness of Indian industries. The data for the Indian trade industries has been obtained from WTO, UNCTACD, IBEF and EXIM- Indian trade data. The time period considered for the study was from 2000–2014. And to illuminate RCA, TSC, RSCA and RC indices tools has been followed to analyse the data. Findings of the study shows that out of 17 Indian industries there has been comparative advantages and competitiveness in 8 industries which includes: agriculture, food, iron and steel, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, Textiles, and Clothing industries where as the other 9 industries have fewer or negative competitive advantages and competitiveness in Indian trade.
