A developing country like India has a larger share of economically backward classified as the bottom of the pyramid. Inclusive development, where both the private companies and the economically weak can prosper simultaneously, would be the dream of any country. Many researchers claim that bottom of the pyramid approach presents such an opportunity. There are also some who disagree with this and suggest that it is just an illusion. This paper presents, the important research work that support as well as contradict the bottom of the pyramid approach, giving a composite picture of the advancement of research activities in this area.
