Relative Population and Host Preference of Fruit Fly Bactrocera dorsalis on Cucurbits

Abstract

Twelve cucurbits namely cucumber, muskmelon, watermelon, round gourd, bottle gourd, smooth gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, pumpkin, longmelon, ash gourd, snake gourd and pointed gourd were tested for the relative population and host preference of fruit fly. The maximum emergence of fruit flies were found in musk melon and bottle gourd, minimum in round gourd. The longmelon was recorded as most preferred host, bitter gourd as preferred host, muskmelon and round gourd were categorized as moderately preferred host while cucumber, bottle gourd and snake gourd recorded as least preferred hosts.
