Identification of Resistance in Soybean to a Virulent Variant of Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Geminivirus
Abstract
Seventeen varieties of soybean (Glycine max) were evaluated for resistance to yellow mosaic disease caused by vector, whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) transmitted mungbean yellow mosaic geminivirus (MYMV) virulent variant MYMV-Pp 1 under glasshouse condition through vector inoculation. Out of these, five varieties of soybean namely, PK 416, PK 1042, PK 1046, Pusa 20 and Pusa 40 were proved to be resistant to MYMV-Ppl. The resistant varieties took longer time (16–29 days) to exhibit symptoms as compared to susceptible varieties (817 days) after inoculation. Nucleic acid spot hybridization (NASH) using homologous probes to DNA-A and -B of MYMV-Bg also confirmed the MYMV-Ppl infection in infected soybean plants.
