In vitro the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS) and in vivo production of proteolytic, cellulolytic and pectic enzymes by virulent, less virulent and avirulent isolates of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignaeradiatae, the incitant of bacterial leaf spot of mungbean was studied. Virulent culture (Xav-BRO) produced 1.526 mg EPS/ml of culture filtrates as compared to 0.498 mg EPS/ml by avirulent culture (Xav-AV). Greater proteolytic and cellulolytic activities were observed for Xav-BRO inoculated susceptible mungbean leaves after 120 hrs of inoculation. In vivo studies of enzymes on susceptible, Pusa Baisakhi cultivar of mungbean further confirmed the role of protease and cellulase in virulence of Xav.
