The effect of chemicals and plant extracts on protease activity of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignaeradiatae, the incitant of bacterial leaf spot of mungbean was studied. Maximum protease activity was inhibited by catechol (77.1%) and PMSF (72.2%) at 5 mM level of concentration. Among the salts, CuSO4 inhibited protease activity about 10% at mM concentration, whereas, CaCI2 and MgSO4 had little effect on protease activity. Virulent culture (Xav -BRO) secreted only 64% enzyme on synthetic medium. Further, on host based medium virulent culture secreted 81.3% protease as compared to 66.7% by avirulent culture.
