In a field trial, four weed control treatments (weedy check, weed free, pendimethalin @ 1 kg a.i./ha pre-emergence + weed free and fluchloralin @ 1.0 kg a.i./ha pre-plant incorporation + weed free) were tried in 12 varieties of mung bean (Vigna radiata). Under non-herbicide treated weed free conditions, variety, Pant Mung-2 gave highest grain yield of 11.10 q/ha followed by Jagriti (8.14 q/ha). The varieties differed in their competing ability with weeds and tolerance to fluchloralin and pendimethalin. The reduction in grain yield/ha in weedy check plots as compared to hand weeded weed free control was maximum in HUM-3 (76.7%) and minimum in PDM-11 (50.5%) with an overall average reduction of 66.8%. Grain yield/ha was reduced by fluchloralin treatment in all the varieties except PDM-139 and NDM-1 that gave slightly higher yields. However, pendimethalin application caused reduction in grain yield only in four varieties; others were either not much affected or gave higher yields as compared to weed free treatment.
