<p>Urd bean [<italic>Vigna mungo</italic>(L.) Hepper] and mung bean [<italic>Vigna radiata</italic> (L.) Wilczek] occupy 3.37 and 3.63 million hectares, respectively. In India, powdery mildew caused by <italic>Erysiphe polygoni</italic> DC., alone causes 20 to 40% yield losses. Gadre <italic>et al.</italic>(<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib001">2002</xref>) showed the important role of date of sowing and weather factors in disease expression. Attempts were therefore, made at I.I.P.R., Kanpur during 2002 and 2003 rainy season to identify genotypes with stable resistance against this disease.</p><p>Eighty nine genotypes of urd bean and 91 of mung bean were evaluated against <italic>E. polygoni</italic> by infector-cum-spreader row technique. Test entries were sown during last week of August in two replications having two rows of each entry of 5 m length with 30 x 10 cm spacing alternated with one infector-row of a highly powdery mildew susceptible mung bean Cv. Kopergaon. Besides, two border rows of the infector surrounded the test entries. Spore mass from severely infected plants were dusted in the screening nursery. Disease observations were recorded at regular intervals with final observations when the infector-row recorded grade 5 in 0–5 rating scale.</p><p>Among 89 urd bean genotypes evaluated, only one, OBG 16 exhibited consistent resistant reaction and 5 genotypes <italic>viz</italic>., HPU 227, UL 23, Pant U 35, IC 106088 and CN 28/1 moderately resistant during both years. Thirteen genotypes proved moderately susceptible, 32 susceptible and 38 highly susceptible.</p><p>Out of 91 mung bean genotypes screened, only 2, BPMR 1 and BPMR 115 exhibited consistently resistant reaction and 5 genotypes <italic>viz</italic>., Pusa 9531, TM 98–50, TM 99–37, TM 99–50 and UPM 99-3 were moderately resistant (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib003">Singh, 2002</xref>). Four genotypes proved moderately susceptible, susceptible and 72 highly susceptible. Resistant urd bean, OBG 16 and mungbean BPMR 1 and BPMR 115 genotypes could be utilized as donor parents for powdery mildew resistance breeding programme in urd bean and mung bean.
