Biology of Anaphothrips sudanensis Trybom on Grass host, Phragmites karka (Retz.) Trin. Ex Steud
Abstract
Duration of development, longevity and life table statistics of Anaphothrips sudanensis was studied on Phragmites karka under the rearing conditions of 18 ± 2°C and 26 ± 1.5°C; 72 ± 5% RH. The fecundity based on larval emergence was 37 ± 6.7 eggs. Egg incubation period, growth duration of larva I and II were 9.5 ± 1.57, 1.5 ± 0.44 and 3 ± 0.8 days, respectively. Duration of prepupa, pupa and adult longevity was 1 ± 0.28, 2 ± 0.44 and 8 to11 days, respectively. Net reproductive rate (Ro) of A. sudanensis was 33.25 eggs. True generation time (T), population doubling time and rate of weekly multiplication of the population (λ7) were 21.36, 4.22 days and 3.15 times, respectively, along with the intrinsic rate of increase in number (rm) being 0.1640. Periodical sampling of A.sudanensis revealed that its population ranged from 10 to 35 individuals/10 sweeps/m2 i.e., minimum during rainy and winter seasons and maximum in spring and autumn. This species occurs in three different forms such as macropterous and brachypterous females and apterous males.
