Field evaluation of Sugarcane clones for resistance to borer complex
Abstract
Twenty clones of early and mid late maturing sugarcane were screened for their relative degree of resistance and susceptibility against early shoot borer Chilo infuscatellus and internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus. All the 12 early maturing clones, were less susceptible to early shoot borer, 9 clones were found less susceptible and 3 were moderately susceptible to internode borer. In early maturing sugarcane clones, % early shoot borer damage was found minimum in CO06082 (2.1) and maximum in CO-06002 (11.0). Minimum % damage of internode borer (5.3%) internode damage was recorded in CO-06082 and CO-03134 and maximum in PIO 6131(19.6%). In mid late maturing sugarcane clones, % damage of ESB was found minimum (2.3) in CO-06026 and maximum (26.0) in CO-06015. Minimum (1.3%) internode damage was also recorded in CO-06012 and maximum (18.3%) in Si 2000–02. Plant growth characters and maximum germination % was recorded 86.3 in CO-03134 and minimum 72.5 in CO 403. The higher number of tillers was observed, 3, 73, 333 tillers/ha in CO-06015 and lower tillers were 72, 000/ha in CO SNK 60101. The maximum sugar yield recorded 17.56 t/ha in Co-06012 and minimum 10.36 in Co 07008. The highest commercial cane sugar % was recorded 13.69 in CO-06012 and lower yield 9.67 in CO-06023. The clone CO06082 recorded higher cane yield of 136.30 t/ha and minimum 93.67 t/ha in PIO 6131.
