Eco-friendly management of post harvest rot of Banana (Musa paradisiaca L.)
Abstract
Management practices were evaluated against post-harvest fungal pathogens causing crown rot Fusarium moniliforme disease of banana. Six pathogens viz.Fusarium moniliforme, Aspergillus niger, Curvularia lunata, Penicillium sp. Gloeosporium musae and Aspergillus sp. were isolated from the diseased banana. Fusarium moniliforme was isolated from all the fruit markets in Prayagraj. Maximum pathogen frequency was recorded for F.moniliforme (37.2%) followed by Curvularia lunata (18.6%), Aspergillus niger (13.5%), Aspergillus sp. (11.8%), Penicillium sp. (10.1%) and minimum frequency was recorded for Gloeosporium musae (8.4%). In in vtro, Sodium carbonate at 4% and wax at 12% inhibited 100% and 90.6% mycelial growth of F. moniliforme, respectively. Wax at 12% maintained quality and increased shelf life when stored at ambient temperature for 10 and 15 days.
