Phytochemical constituents of some botanicals used in the treatment of haemorrhoid (pile) in Ekiti state, southwestern Nigeria

The study investigated phytochemical constituents of ethanolic extracts of nine medicinal plants used for the treatment of haemorrhoid in Ekiti State, Southwestern part of Nigeria. The phytochemical screening of these plants revealed that they contain bioactive chemical substances such as alkaloids, flavanoids, steroids, terpenoids, tannins, saponins and others with therapeutic potentials. The presence of major phytoconstituents was detected quantitatively. The plants leaves and root extracts had significant amount of flavonoids ranging from 3.22–43.44%, saponins 0.943.45%, tannins 0.40–1.68% and alkaloids 0.32–1.13% thereby justifying the folkloric use of these medicinal plants.
