Abstract

A combination of social survey and direct field observation was used to examine ethnobotanicals used in managing Newcastle Disease in poultry animals in Ekiti Central Senatorial District. Identified botanicals revealed that the plants were useful and very effective in prophylactic and therapeutic purposes.

Proximate composition of the botanicals was determined and it was revealed that there is presence of crude carbohydrate, protein, ash, fiber and moisture contents.

Of all the identified botanicals, A. vera contains the highest value of Ash content of 8.56% and A. Capscicum annum contain the lowest value of 3.50%. A. vera has the highest moisture percentage of 6.53% while C. annum, have the lowest values of 0.38% each. Also, C. annum contain the lowest carbohydrate level of 8.61%.

Conclusively, rural dwellers use many plant types for medicinal purposes and have acquired a very deep knowledge on the usefulness of these plants in the Senatorial district.
