Plants used for the treatment of malaria in Akoko land area of Ondo state, Nigeria

Abstract

An ethnobotanical survey of some medicinal plants used for the treatment of malaria in Akoko area of Ondo-State was carried out using semi-structured questionnaire matrix. A total of 40 plant species belonging to 24 families were found frequently used in herbal antimalaria. Among the plant mentioned were Morinda lucida (Oruwo), Enantia chlorantha (Awopa), Alstonei boonei (Ahun), Azardiractha indica (Dongoyaro) and Khaya grandifolia (Ogunwo). Relevant information on these species with regards to their botanical names, family, local name, part(s) used and method of utilization by the indigenous people were documented. It showed that irrespective of the plant and part or combinations of the plant parts, water was the main medium of herbal antimalaria preparations. Treatment regimes includes drinking, bathing and steam inhalation.
