Ayushman Bharat, a flagship initiative of the Government of India, has transformed the healthcare landscape over the past six years through its three key pillars: Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs), Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This paper evaluates the integrated impact of these initiatives on improving healthcare accessibility, affordability, and efficiency. The HWCs have strengthened primary healthcare by offering a range of essential services, including preventive and promotive care, at the community level. PM-JAY has provided financial protection to over 500 million beneficiaries, enabling access to secondary and tertiary care for economically vulnerable populations. The ABDM is fostering the digitization of health records, ensuring seamless data exchange, and enhancing the overall efficiency of the healthcare ecosystem. Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has completed six years since its inception, marking a transformative period in India’s healthcare landscape.
This study assesses the program’s accomplishments and effects on the healthcare system. The Indian government introduced the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), popularly known as the “Ayushman Bharat Initiative,” in 2018. Cooperative federalism and state flexibility are the cornerstones of the Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission. About 1,350 medical packages, including surgery, daycare, medication, and diagnostics, are covered by PMJAY. To provide accessible and reasonably priced healthcare for a significant portion of the population, it needed the involvement of private sector hospitals and insurers, the use of technology for the scheme’s administration, and the cooperation of centres and states. In order to create a longitudinal electronic health record for each individual, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) was established to develop an online platform that facilitates health data interoperability within the health ecosystem. The mission’s goal is to provide the framework required to enable the nation’s integrated digital health infrastructure.
