Abstract

The energy crisis is looming across the globe and so are the issues of pollution, environmental hazards, weather imbalance and more commonly the dreaded Global warming. Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other gases- as a group called “greenhouse” gases (GHG) have the potential to bring severe ramification to entire globe. The type of research in the present paper is purely descriptive in nature. The main aim of this paper is to study India's past and present effort in mitigating C02 emission through CDM and India's position in global platform in this respect. The present paper highlights role of Kyoto Protocol in mitigating the GHGs emissions. Per capita C02 emission by India gs compared to developed countries is very less, but in terms of total C02 emission, India is 4fh largest emitter in the world. In this connection this paper also critically studies potential benefit of carbon credit trading and also the challenges ahead. The information/data have been collected from various authentic sources like IGES CDM Project data base etc for the purpose of the study.
