Abstract

Frozen Shrimp contributes a major share in export from India among the marine products in terms of value, although in terms of quantity it is the second largest commodity exported from India after frozen fish. USA is the major importer of frozen shrimp from India followed by Japan. The study was carried out at macro level hence the nature of data used here was entirely based on secondary sources. Data pertaining to quantity and value was compiled from various sources like Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) offi cial website www.mpeda.com Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) www.commerce.nic.in, Annual Reports, published journals, periodicals and other websites for a period of 18 years (1995–96 to 2012–2013).Compound Growth Analysis and Markov chain analysis techniques were adopted to analyze the data The compound annual growth rate for frozen shrimp export to Belgium was found to be highest with respect to quantity as well as value, followed by UAE, Where as Growth rate for Japan with respect to quantity as well as value was found to be negative due to sanitary and phytosanitary measures implied by Japan over the import of frozen Shrimp from India. The result also shows that the growth rate was found to be highest for Belgium, because of the emerging demand for Indian shrimp in Belgium, while Netherlands and UAE have also shown the positive growth rate for frozen shrimp import from India. Japan was the most reliable and loyal market for Indian Frozen shrimp, followed by UK and USA.
