Abstract

The improvement in yields (productivity) has contributed the highest in the growth of pulse production, with the highest increase in gram. About 73 per cent growth in pulse production during last ten years ending 2013 has come from productivity with chick pea and pigeon pea being exceptions to it. Nevertheless, the increase in retail prices of pulses may be due to continuous decrease in area under Urd crop and the decrease in productivity of Pigeon pea. Along with increase in population, there is increase in per capita consumption which makes India deficit in production of pulses. The ramifications of the same are increase in prices of the pulses. The higher minimum support prices of pulses have not yielded results in reducing the gap.
