Tamil Nadu’s dairy industry has historically been strengthened by the network of cooperative milk societies. The dairy industry took a new shape when the Tamil Nadu Dairy Development Department was formed in 1958. The Salem District had larger number of Milk Producers’ Cooperatives Societies followed by Madurai District in respect of active societies. In respect of Cattle population, Tiruchirappalli District Milk Cooperative Society had the largest number. The Salem District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Association had the largest processing capacity of milk per day. In terms of procurement of milk per day, the Salem District Milk Producers’ association has succeeded and accomplished an increase of around twelve per cent during the year of study over the previous years. The Salem District cooperative milk producers union took the first place in terms of procurement of milk and the second place in terms of quantity of milk sold per day. The most performing milk unions have failed to distribute the milk products appreciably on par with the private operators. For that purpose, milk unions can conduct consumer survey periodically and the preferences may be noted for further expansion and to add dynamism in procurement and sale of milk and milk products. Besides these, forecasting of milk sales was also analyzed and presented for the year 2025 with appropriate strategies to ensure the production and sale of milk and milk products.
