Black rice, literally known as Chak-hao is one of the aromatic varieties of rice in Manipur. The nutritional value of black rice is high, and it contains vitamins that are recommended for pregnant women and diabetic patients. Various types of value-added products are available in the market with huge profit shares. The study was carried out during the year 2021-23, with the objective of examining the extent of value-addition and marketing channels for black rice and its products in Manipur. The findings of the study showed that black rice was observed to be highly profitable for farmers as well as marketing stakeholders, but processing industries earned a high profit share among value chain actors of black rice. Black rice cake contributed the highest value addition, followed by black rice biscuits, while among value chain actors, the processing industries secured the most value addition. The study recommended that there is a need to enhance the demand for Chak-hao products in domestic as well as international markets, which can boost the income and employment opportunities of the state.
