Abstract

This study explores the procurement and logistics management practices in mango processing, focusing on pickle and pulp manufacturing units in Karnataka, India. Mango processing is a significant agro-industrial activity that adds value to the fruit while reducing post-harvest losses. The research compares the inbound and outbound logistics of two distinct processing units: M.N. Pickles, specializing in pickle production, and Sun-Sip Agro Processors, a mango pulp manufacturer. The analysis reveals differences in raw material sourcing, handling and distribution strategies. Pickle manufacturers rely heavily on contract farming (75%) and small-scale procurement from APMC and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), ensuring a steady supply of raw mangoes. Their outbound logistics emphasize direct consumer access through retail shops and selling vans. In contrast, pulp manufacturers focus on large-scale procurement through vendors and distributors, with significant use of third-party logistics for exports and industrial clients. Both units face challenges such as seasonality, transportation inefficiencies, and quality preservation. However, their tailored approaches address specific market demands-pickles for domestic consumption and pulp for industrial and international markets. This comparative study highlights the importance of efficient logistics and procurement strategies in improving operational efficiency and market reach in the mango processing industry.
