Abstract

Food packaging plays a vital role in the modern food system because it tackles a variety of challenges, which include certifying the safety and quality of the product, balancing consumer requirements, and adhering to legal standards. However, the regular use of traditional packaging materials, especially petroleum-based plastics, leads serious environmental issues because of their lack of biodegradability and long-term impact on ecosystems. This systematic review examines innovative approaches in food industries that attempt to improve sustainability and reduce environmental impact by using different packaging materials and methods. The study analyzes current trends and barriers to adopting eco friendly packaging alternatives, with particular emphasis on consumer perceptions and technological improvements in the packaging sector. Despite the apparent advantages of eco friendly packaging, challenges such as budgetary constraints, legal complications, and discrepancies in consumer education impede broad implementation. The evaluation emphasises the need for collaboration among business, government, and consumers to accelerate the transition to more eco-friendly packaging techniques across the global food supply chain.
