This research paper investigates the potential of horticultural crops in Assam, essential for its agrarian economy, which employs over 55% of the workforce. Despite the state’s fertile land and natural resources, low productivity and persistent poverty are significant challenges. The shift towards horticultural crops, known for their higher market demand, offers opportunities for improving livelihoods. The study analyzes trends in production, area, and productivity over an 18-year period, revealing a decline in vegetable growth rates from 2014-15 to 2022-23 due to adverse climatic conditions and economic issues. In contrast, spices showed improved production, indicating changing farmer preferences. Regression analysis highlights a strong relationship between crop area, yield, and production, explaining 82-96% of production variability. However, the sector faces challenges such as flooding, pest infestations, inadequate infrastructure, and high post-harvest losses, threatening food security. The paper recommends strategies to enhance infrastructure, access to technology, and effective policy implementation to unlock the horticulture sector’s full potential, contributing to sustainable economic growth in Assam.
