Abstract

Ithrib (Rumex nervosus) is an annual herbaceous plant that belongs to Polygonaceae family. It is widely distributed in the temperate Himalayas; Western Ghat of Nilgiri and Nainital hills. It is also found extensively in Eastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. However, little information is available on this plant because of documentation of knowledge is incomplete particularly on the traditional uses by local people. In this review, the significance of R. nervosus derived from its composition of large numbers of biologically active compounds, which has made it a potential source of new natural drugs and functional foods has been discussed.
