Rape in Manipur – An analytical study

Abstract

Victims of rape in Manipur during the period of 1990–1997 were studied and analysed. During this 8 years' period, there were 86 cases of rape. It was found that incidence was much higher in rural area (74%) than that of urban area (14%). Commonest victims were unmarked (57%) and in the age group of 13–20 years. Rape by acquaintance was much commoner (69%) than stranger rapes (25%), and most of the general injuries caused were found in stranger rapes. Incidence of rape was gradually decreasing in Manipur. Child victims constituted 19.8%.
