To explore the relationship between injury pattern of various body regions among medico legal cases (MLC) and Non - medico legal cases (NMLC) who reported at casualty services at the start of Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center (JPNATC), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India.
A retrospective study of 894 patients involved in road traffic accidents (RTA) over 6 month's period, who presented at JPNATC, AIIMS, New Delhi, India, was undertaken. These patients were categorized as either (MLC) or Nomedico legal case NMLC based on the cause and mechanism of the RTA. 505 of 894 patients (56.5%) were MLC and remaining 389 patients (43.5%) were NMLC. Age, sex, location of injury, helmet and seatbelt use, clinical diagnosis, Injury Severity Score, Glasgow Coma Scale score were collected for each patient. Alcohol consumption was also checked by Alcotech for breath alcohol.
The incidence of head, face, chest, abdomen, upper extremity, lower extremity and spine injury in MLC were 21.78%, 15.84%, 5.94%, 4.95%, 14.85%, 30.69% and 5.94%,respectively, while in NMLC, these were 20.56%, 14.13%, 3.34%, 3.85%, 17.48%, 35.21% and 5.39% respectively. 29% of all patients were found positive for breath alcohol by Alcotech.
More injuries to head, face, chest, abdomen and spine were found in MLC compared with NMLC.
