Abstract

This was a retrospective study of sudden death due to myocardial infarction which was conducted at UMMC, Kuala Lumpur to analyze the incidence of myocardial infarction, common causes and the prevalence in various ages, ethnicity, sex, occupation and other miscellaneous aspects. Myocardial infarction is one of the important cause of sudden death. It was most commonly caused by rupture of the atheromatous plaque in the coronary arteries. The cases with sudden death due to myocardial infarction had predominantly male predilection and the mean age was found to be 47.4 years in our study. Majority of the cases with sudden deaths had associated chronic medical disorder. Left ventricle was found to be the most common site for fibrosis, haemorrhage and infarction. The kidneys showed glomerulosclerosis in most of the cases. In the present study, majority of the deceased had heart weight heavier than normal(250–300 gm).
