Abstract

The term “schizophrenia” is simply defined as condition of split personality, in which the patient loses his contact with reality. Schizophrenia is one of the most common psychiatric illnesses and also associated with many medico legal applications.

Nicotine consumption for long time leads to development of many diseases to an individual. The present study was aimed to find out correlation between nicotine addiction and occurrence of Schizophrenia. In the present study 60 cases of schizophrenia, were examined and compared with 60 control cases during the period of 3 years at the department of Psychiatry at New civil Hospital and government medical college, Surat, Gujarat.

Various epidemiological and relevant aspects deduced from the present study to find out correlation between schizophrenia and smoking are presented.
